Sitting on a steep bank overlooking the deep blue Chukhloma Lake, this tiny town ranks among the oldest ones in Kostroma region. Amazingly, it has preserved the charm and soul of a typical nineteenth century town.

According to some chronicles, it dates back to the 10th century. At that time the town had been located on the opposite bank of the Chukhloma Lake.

The year 1381 is recognized as the official date of its foundation.

Chukhloma is associated with the names of the manufacturer and philanthropist Feodor Chizhov, the poet Pavel Katenin, the playwright Alexey Pisemsky, the philosopher Alexandre Zinoviev and the actor Mikhail Pugovkin. There is a museum to Pugovkin in the cinema building called “Ecran”.

The open creativity festival “Chukhloma pugovka” is held every year. Guests of the town can see their favorite film characters of the Soviet era.

In addition to this festival, people can also take part in the annual musical festival “Play, Kostroma Harmonica” or participate in the popular family car rally “A complete Chukhloma”.
